England 0-1 Rest Of World

This weekend has been a pretty poor one to be an English sports fan. In fact, save for Ricky Hatton's unexpected victory, England's friendly win over Germany in the football, and I suppose I can throw in Lewis Hamilton's last-gasp win in Brazil seeing as it was within the last month, it's not been a great few weeks.

The cricketers put in an improved, but still poor performance in Bangalore to go 4-0 down in the seven-match series. I had the fortune to be commentating on that game and I took no… Continue

13 - Not A Lucky Number

If you think the Gingerbreads have problems (or perhaps that should be had, after a couple of wins following the appointment of a new manager), then they have nothing on Grantham Hockey Club. Our third league defeat from three saw us go down by 13, yes 13, goals to one against Leicester University yesterday.

I can't remember ever being in a team that conceded 13 before, and although it is scant consolation, we did at least score, as we have done in each game so far. Mind, that only came once th… Continue

Calling any hockey players out there...

Grantham has nearly 35,000 residents, yet more often than not, our hockey club struggles to put out full sides. And that is even taking into account that a lot of our players don't even live in Grantham.

Today was no different as we travelled to Boston for a pre-season six-a-side tournament but could only raise five players. At least a couple of players from Leadenham helped us out with the odd appearance and a Grantham cum Kings School team also lent us players on occasion.

Not, though, when… Continue

Arguing - Why Bother?

Whilst being kept awake by people screaming and shouting at each other last night I wondered why if you're going to have an argument, do you need to have at a level where everyone can hear it? Then, come to think of it, why bother arguing anyway?

Two plus two will never make five, so accept it and move on. My point of view doesn't tally with yours? OK, fine, we'll agree to disagree and move on. Arguing is a complete waste of time and energy that could be put to far better use.

And then you've… Continue

30 Is The Magic Number (Well, Sort Of)

I had the pleasure of my parents visiting me this weekend past which gave me several things to think about. I also saw Grantham Men's Hockey team win a game of hockey for the first time since I joined the club last year - see the video here for some evidence.

That outing in Leicester left me pretty stiff on Sunday but no matter, I was up at 6.30am to make sure the flat was clean and tidy and that I was fully awake and ready to offer directi… Continue

Dear John I see you are a sporty person. I am running an event at the Meres on 30th October - its a snooker match between Jimmy White & Steve Davis, John Virgo will also be there. Tickets are £17.50 and £19.50. There are also some sponsorship opportunities. Just thought this may be of interest to you or some of your colleagues at your work place or sports clubs you attend?
